Hi all,
I am glad everyone enjoyed the video of the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York’s rehearsal of their Danza Concheros. I will be traveling to Bridgeport, CT today, Sunday, May 4 to spend time with the group with the intention of videoing the performance and interview the dancers. The weather is supposed to be wonderful. YES! The rehearsal and performance videos, along with a written report on Danca Concheros and the history of this particular group will be submitted to Diana for The Hemispheric Institute. Juventina Duran, Artistic Director of Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York was gracious in permitting me to do so. I will, of course, be giving her a copy of all materials. I was led to the group by Emily Socolov, Project Director, Center for Traditional Music and Dance, who visited our class.
I have thoroughly enjoyed our class, and though unforeseen additional responsibilities caused a lax in my written responses to the readings as of late, a fact that has caused me great concern, I have kept current with the readings and your submissions on Web-Board. Thank you.
I an attempt to “weave” the course, I would not only like to reflect on the final papers, but also some key concepts that have became exceptionally meaningful to me these past few months. In fact, due to the manner in which the materials were analyzed, chosen and presented, my worldview of how the elements and structure of theatre can impact society has been somewhat transformed. This is my first experience with Hemispheric Institute and the Performance Studies Program. I always say to my students: A COURSE should TAKE you somewhere. This one has succeeded in doing so. Someplace where…“We float with our feet in the air and our heads hanging down.”-Triana
On that note, I’ll leave you until Monday.
Here are some key words/thoughts that keep rolling over in my mind:
· Defiance
· The Performative
· Mirroring
· Public Transcript / Hidden Transcript
· Decadent forms / Popular forms
· Colonizing striping the Original
· Gender Inversion
All the best,
Anthony
