*particle group* is a collective consisting of Principal Investigators Ricardo Dominguez (artivist), Diane Ludin (new media artist), Nina Waisman (Interactive Sound Installation Design), and Amy Sara Carroll (poet/critic), with a number of others flowing in and out. Assistant Researchers Marius Schebella, Pierre Galaud, and Césaire José Carroll-Dominguez. The group combines new media, the paraliterary, performance, artivism, and humor to produce different gestures that forge a subversive relationship with the newest frontiers of technological science in an effort to undermine some of their assumptions of authority and power. *particle group* has exhibited at ISEA (San Jose) 2006, House of World Culture (Berlin) 2007, "Inside the Wave" at the San Diego Museum of Art 2008, Oi Futuro and FILE (Brazil) 2008, CAL NanoSystems Institute (UCLA), 2009, and Medialab-Prado, Madrid (Spain), 2009.
Ricardo Dominguez is a co-founder of The Electronic Disturbance Theater (EDT), a group that developed Virtual-Sit-In technologies in 1998 in solidarity with the Zapatista communities in Chiapas. His recent Electronic Disturbance Theater project with Brett Stabaum, Micha Cardenas, and Amy Sara Carroll is the *Transborder Immigrant Tool* (a GPS cell phone safety net tool for crossing the Mexico/U.S border) and was the winner of "Transnational Communities Award," funded by the *Cultural Contact* Endowment for Culture Mexico-U.S. (and awarded by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico), also funded by CALIT2 and two Transborder Awards from the UCSD Center for the Humanities. Ricardo is an associate professor at UCSD in the Visual Arts Department, a Hellman Fellow, and Principal/Principle Investigator at CALIT2 (bang.calit2.net).
Diane Ludin is a writer, media artist, and educator. Born in New York, she studied Drawing and Installation at the State University of New York at Purchase (1989-1993) and Computer Art at the School of Visual Arts in (1998-2000). As an artist, she has participated in exhibitions and events such as New York Digital Salon 2001, Ars Electronica 2002, DEAF 2003, ISEA 2004 and 2006, Whitney ArtPort 2004, Medialabmadrid 2005, and Nomadic New York in Berlin, 2006. Ludin has completed online commissions for The Walker Art Center, New Radio and Performing Arts, Franklin Furnace, and The Alternative Museum. She has held Artist Residencies for the World Views program in 2000 and Harvestworks in 2004. She is currently a lecturer in the MFA Computer Art Department of New York's School of Visual Arts.
Nina Waisman's work considers technologically driven forms of control and communication, exploring their impact on the body's space, time, and logic. Her production ranges from interactive sound-and-sculpture installations to object-making and performance, with projects shown at venues such as the House of World Cultures in Berlin, CECUT in Tijuana, Lincoln Center in NYC, the San Diego Museum of Art, UCLA, LACE and Telic in Los Angeles, UCSD, The Museum of Arts & Crafts-ITAMI in Japan, and 2B Galéria in Budapest. Upcoming shows include solo projects at the FILE new media festival and the PDCON festival at the Museum of Image and Sound, both in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as well as an exhibition with CUBO collective at gallery@calit2 at UCSD. Waisman holds a BA, magna cum laude from Harvard University, a BFA in Fine Art from Art Center College of Design, and an MFA in Visual Arts from UCSD. Amy Sara Carroll is assistant professor of Latina/o Studies in the English Department and the Program of American Culture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; she received a Ph.D. in Literature from Duke University (2004), an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Cornell University (1995), an MA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (2003), and an A.B. in Anthropology and Creative Writing from Princeton University (1990). In 2005-2006, Carroll held a Mellon postdoctoral fellowship in Latino/a Studies and English at Northwestern University. Her scholarly essays have or will appear in TDR, SIGNS, e-misférica, and the edited volume, Representación y fronteras: el performance en los límites del género (UNAM/PUEG/UNIFEM). Her poetry has appeared or will appear in various journals and anthologies such as HOW2, jubilat, Talisman, Carolina Quarterly, The Iowa Review, and This Bridge We Call Home. She has served as an artist- or writer-in-residence at the Saltonstall Arts Colony in Ithaca, New York, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Fundación Valparaiso in Mojacar, Spain. Additionally, Carroll translated and created subtitles and visual poems for Claudio Valdes Kuri's theatrical production El automovil gris (The Grey Automobile), which was performed at numerous venues, including the Anglo Mexico Foundation, the Ebert Film Festival, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her first collection of poetry and prints, Secession, is forthcoming from Hyperbole Books (an imprint of San Diego State University Press).
