Do it Yourself: Making a Mask with a Mold

Step 1: Gather Supplies
Necessary supplies include a mold, Vaseline, brown packing tape with glue back (if this is not available paper mache paste and newspaper strips will work well), scissors and water.
Step 2: Prep Mold
Apply Vaseline to the mold, insuring that the small crevices (such as teeth) are covered.  This will insure that the mask will not stick in the mold.
Step 3:  Cut Packing Tape Strips
Cut the tape into small strips of various sizes.  You will need larger strips for the sides and smaller strips for the details such as teeth and nose.
Step 4: Wet the Strips in Water
The strips should be wet enough to become pliable but not so wet that puddles from in the mold.  Wet the strips one at a time otherwise they will stick together and become unusable.
Step 5: Apply Strips to the Mold
When applying them to the mold it is best to shingle them to insure the mask is sturdy.  Also, make sure to press the strips together well so the adhesive sticks properly. When working on the details, small strips are best and will need to be manipulated to fit into the small crevices.
Step 6: Reinforcing the Mask
When the mold is completely covered double check to insure there are no spots which are very thin.  If there are thin spots, simply apply more tape strips until the mask feels sturdy.
Step 7: Drying the Mask
Depending on who much water was used the mask will take several hours to a full day to dry.  Placing it in the sun will accelerate the drying, as will using a hair dryer.  Make sure the mask is fully dry before taking it out of the mold or it may rip or bend.  
Step 8: Decorating the Mask
There is no wrong way to decorate a mask!  Some fun decoration elements include, paint, tissue paper, tin foil, glitter and much more.  Be creative and have fun!
