Coming out this November!

Performing Religion in the Americas: Media, Politics, and Devotional Practices of the 21st Century. Edited by Alyshia Gálvez. Published by Seagull Books London Ltd.

Synopsis:

Religious practice and belief remain astoundingly diverse across North and South America. At a time when globalization is taken to mean the ever greater homogenization of cultures, Performing Religion in the Americas reveals how individual cultures are more resilient than ever and that religion is a particularly rich area of diversity. Religion is an especially rich arena for the analysis of political and cultural performance because the complexity of devotional practice and the intensity of faith can permeate all other parts of social life. Presenting detailed ethnographies from Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Canada, and the United States and drawing on a wide range of approaches—from Theater, Comparative Literature, Sociology, Anthropology, History, English, and Performance Studies—Performing Religion in the Americas reveals the breadth of faith-based cultural practice in the 21st Century.

NoPe - NoPassport Conference
Dreaming the Americas/Diversity and Difference in Performance

NoPassport presents a two-day conference with the support of the Immigrants' Theatre Project, Theatre Without Borders, the Translation Think Tank, and in collaboration with the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center.
Initiated by Caridad Svich: www.caridadsvich.com/NoPassport

The conference will focus on a wide range of contemporary works for theatre and performance, viewing the Americas from a variety of formal perspectives. Topics that will be addressed in panels and works-in-progress presentations include: translation as bridge/barrier; migration and exile as they affect content and form; the different languages of the Americas; religion, spirituality and theatrical ecology; readings and mis-readings of stories; the possibilities of liveness; and the inscriptions of the invisible onto visible histories.

NoPassport was founded by Caridad Svich as a Pan-American theatre coalition/collective devoted to action, advocacy, and change toward the fostering of cross-cultural diversity and difference in the arts with an emphasis on the embrace of the hemispheric spirit in U.S. Latina/o and Latin-American theatremaking.
