Interview with Mariela Brito: Actriz El Ciervo Encantado (2018)

Interview with Mariela Brito: Actriz El Ciervo Encantado (2018) HIDVL
In 2018 at the Hemispheric Institute, Marlène Ramírez-Cancio interviewed Mariela Brito of the Cuban theater and performance collective El Ciervo Encantado about the performances "¡Guan Melón! ¡Tu Melón!" and "Departures," and about the span of their work more broadly. Brito explains that the group's performance pieces derive from research questions that they developed during past performances, concatenating their various works along a thread of consistent concerns about emigration, immigration, oppression, and Cuba's subordination to the global North. She says that their objective is to overcome superficial understandings of cubanía to reveal a "submerged identity" of the nation. Brito also describes her personal story of leaving and returning to the island, as well as repression she has faced from the Cuban state.
