Director:María Firmino-Castillo

Participants: Claudia Hernández, Rafael Álvarez Domenech Felo

La del fuego en el horizonte is a ten-minute experimental video made in collaboration with Claudia Hernández, a young K’iche’ Maya woman from Totonicapan, Guatemala, and Rafael Álvarez Domenech Felo, a Cuban performance and video artist temporarily residing in Ecuador. The story reveals the realities common to many young migrant women, while portraying Claudia's personal struggle for a radical autonomy, despite culturally inscribed notions of gender, ethnicity, and "correct" sexual conduct. It also reveals her luminous creativity and expressive power in the process of telling her story, while also of constantly (re)inventing herself.

Biography

María Firmino-Castillo was born in Guatemala. She developed epistemic and representational practices that weave together ethnographic description, poetry, experimental video, and performance art. She has found fertile use for these practices in community organizing, experimental education, and cultural work.
