Witnessing: Creating Intimate Performances

Witnessing: Creating Intimate Performances

A practice-based workshop on the politics of witnessing in intimate, participatory performances. Scholars and artists will practice engaging the audience as a co-performer, with particular focus on the ethics of participation and the performer-spectator relationship. We will investigate and experiment with intimate (one-on-one and very small audience) performance in which the viewer is configured as witness or accomplice. How do we configure micro-audiences in relation to performing bodies? What do we ask of the viewer? How do we elicit participation while negotiating social contracts of mutual dependence?
