Jill Lane: What is Performance Studies?

This Teach-in will familiarize participants with the field of Performance Studies. Our discussion will explicate and compare different critical approaches to the study of performance, including performance ethnography, the performativity of language, liveness, political performance, digital performance, the performativity of gender and race, and performing visuality. Theoretical paradigms will be illustrated by selections of pivotal moments in the history of performance art.

Jill Lane is Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU and Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese. She is author of Blackface Cuba (UPenn 2005) and writes about contemporary political performance and performance art.
