About
About
Join us for the opening of In the Dark: Scenes from a Moving Archive. The exhibition crosses the boundaries between performance and preservation, between embodied creation and visual archives. Standing in the dark of a gallery, surrounded by a ribbon of light, we experience works by artists who make theater, visual art, dance, music, and performance art. Together, we discover archives of movement and stillness, ritual and rhythm, sound and sense, consciousness and memory.
In the Dark features works by Juan Carlos Alom, Daymé Arocena, Arthur Avilés, Charlotte Brathwaite, Beatrice Capote, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Dragonfly, Regina José Galindo, Ayrson Heráclito, the House of Ultra Omni, Nadia Huggins, Carlos Martiel, Aurelio Martínez, National Black Theatre, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, David Sánchez, and Teatro Línea de Sombra. These seventeen works, displayed across eight screens, form part of the Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library at NYU. The Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library (HIDVL) is one of the most important performance archives in the world.
In the Dark invites us to reflect on darkness as a time of both peril and discovery. We offer the light generated by these works as resources in moments of darkness.
