“Performing the Personal Archive” is a journey through the work of Puerto Rican actor and scenic athlete Kairiana Núñez Santaliz. In this talk, Núñez Santaliz describes her process as anchored in the adaptation and appropriation of theatrical and non-theatrical materials, including social, poetic, and embodied texts. She frames her work as an interweaving of personal and collective narratives rooted in queer thought and practice, challenging the structures of traditional theater and the island’s colonial cultural production.

Kairiana Núñez Santaliz is a Puerto Rican artist and theater educator for children, youth, and the elderly. Autobiographical and epistolary materials, dogs, dreams, and the Puerto Rican colonial situation are some of the topics that influence her work. As part of Northwestern University’s Puerto Rican Art Initiative, she is currently developing a performance using archival materials belonging to her uncle, playwright, director, and charismatic anti-establishment figure, Pedro Santaliz. Núñez Santaliz graduated from the Department of Drama at the University of Puerto Rico, and joined El Nuevo Teatro Pobre de América in 1996. She was a founding member of Jóvenes del 98 —a street theater group directed by Maritza Pérez Otero— and continued her training with Puerto Rican artists like Rosa Luisa Márquez, Teresa Hernández, and Viveca Vázquez. While living in Argentina, she trained under Mirta Bogdasarian and Ricardo Bartís in the Sportivo Teatral, and was a member of Quinto Piso and Colectivo El Rizoma. She was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival for her role in El silencio del viento, a film by Puerto Rican filmmaker Álvaro Aponte Centeno. Her most recent works include Espírita Santaliz, Chiquitita o Miss Miller - the Parachute Woman, La basquetbolista, and Mónica.
