Arthur Avilés Typical Theatre: Bard College Alumni Dance Concert (1993)

Arthur Avilés Typical Theatre presents "Intoxicating Calm" and "A Typical New York Rican" as part of Bard College's alumni dance concert. "Intoxicating Calm" is a solo by Arthur Avilés in which he performs quick, rigorous, athletic phrases that form movement and character sketches reflective of his internal feelings. In "A Typical New York Rican" Avilés is joined by Elizabeth "Macha" Marrero and Chikako Yamauchi in a dance theater piece exploring radicalized ideas and stereotypes and vindicating the identity of the typical "New York Rican.” Marrero discusses gentrification in the South Bronx, the lack of identity politics in the dance world, and the lifestyle and culture of a New York Rican among other groups in New York City. Avilés and Yamauchi perform movement phrases that abstract and animate Marrero's monologue throughout the performance.
