Biografía

Kairiana Núñez Santaliz Santaliz es una artista y educadora de niños, jóvenes y adultos originaria de Puerto Rico. Materiales autobiográficos y epistolares, perros, sueños y la situación colonial de Puerto Rico son algunos de los temas que influencian su trabajo. Fue una miembro fundadora de Jóvenes del 98 -un grupo de teatro callejero dirigido por Maritza Pérez Otero.

Focusing on social justice, we research politically engaged performance and amplify it through gatherings, courses, publications, and archives. Our dynamic, multilingual network traverses disciplines and borders and is grounded in the fundamental belief that artistic practice and critical reflection can spark lasting cultural change.

Hemispheric Institute Projects and Initiatives

Gatherings Encuentros are itinerant, biennial gatherings of hundreds of artists, scholars, and activists from across the Americas to collaborate, share work, and engage in dialogue and experimentation through a program of lectures, performances, roundtables, work groups, exhibitions, and workshops.

Publications HemiPress is the Hemispheric Institute’s digital publications imprint, created to house and centralize our diverse publication initiatives. Using a variety of customized open-source digital humanities platforms, HemiPress includes the Gesture short works series, the Duke U.P./HemiPress digital books, stand-alone essays, and the Institute’s peer-reviewed journal emisférica, alongside interviews, Cuadernos, and other online teaching resources.

Local Events Housed at NYU, Hemi New York is a hub for artistic and scholarly exchange. Hemi New York hosts year-round public programming, including lectures, conferences, performances, exhibitions, artist residencies, and a visiting scholars program. Core initiatives include EMERGENYC, our training program for emerging artivists; the Critical Tactics Lab, a forum for researching contemporary and historical collective action; and Hemispheric Dialogues, a series of informal conversations on issues such as Indigeneities, Disabilities, and Trans-feminisms.

Courses Our interdisciplinary courses, offered in different locations in the Americas, combine the face-to-face quality of traditional classrooms with immersive site visits and online collaboration. Taught by leading scholars and artists and open to students from throughout the Hemi network, our intensive courses have been held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico; Bogotá, Colombia; and Lima, Peru.

Membership Hemi is animated by its member institutions. Each organization contributes its local knowledge to create a network far more powerful than any single entity. In addition to participating in the vision and practice of Hemi, member institutions gain enhanced access to Hemi’s digital authoring tools, online archives, and other pedagogical resources. Faculty and students also have opportunities to propose work groups, participate in graduate-level courses, and engage with an active, Americas-wide network to address pressing social issues.

Video Library Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library (HIDVL) is the first major online video archive of performance in the Americas, created in collaboration with NYU Libraries and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This growing repository guarantees historical preservation and free online access to more than 900 hours of streaming video through the Hemi website. Each collection includes a trilingual profile that contextualizes the work.

Work Groups Work groups facilitate long-term and collaborative research between scholars, artists, and activists. These groups are interdisciplinary and focus on themes such as Performing Disability/Enabling Performance, Performance Practice as Research, Women Mobilizing Memory, Performing the Asian/Americas, The Street and the Network: Activism in the 21st Century, and Carnival and Popular Fiestas.

Physical Library Housed in the Tamiment Library at NYU, our physical archive includes fragile materials such as slides, photographs, books, posters, and other performance ephemera, as well as collections of important artists and activists like Jesusa Rodríguez (Mexico) and the Yes Men (US). Archives at Risk, the collection of materials housed in NYU’s Special Collections at Bobst, preserves work on performance and politics that cannot—or will not—be protected in their countries of origin in the Americas.We also maintain a collection of rare books, journals, and videos at our offices in New York.

Durante la semana de actividades del Encuentro del Instituto Hemisférico, nuestro Laboratorio de inmersión y narrativas tuvo un encuentro con el colectivo Family Reunions Project (FRP). Lo que se expone aquí son las bitácoras abiertas del proceso de reflexionar en torno a la reconfiguración de cartografías a través de la narrativa inmersiva.

The Illuminator — Laboratorio de tecnologías libres

Durante la semana de actividades del Encuentro del Instituto Hemisférico, nuestro Laboratorio de Tecnologías Libres tuvo un encuentro con el colectivo The Illuminator. Lo que se expone aquí son las bitácoras abiertas del proceso de pensar las tecnologías y los cuerpos virtuales como herramientas para resistir a las fronteras ideológicas y geográficas.

FRPxTN (Frisly Soberanis) — Laboratorio de Inmersión y Narrativas

¿Cómo adelgazar lo delimitado por fronteras?, ¿es posible generar desplazamientos transversales desde el trabajo colaborativo y la ficción? Desde los ejes de acción que involucran a los medios tácticos, el poder del debate y la reconfiguración de cartografías a través de la narrativa, este grupo de trabajo busca crear un área de experimentación para creación de herramientas de acción frente la inminente crisis de sentido. Sin buscar resultados puntuales y abriendo al discurso orgánico, se plantea que esta exploración se lleve a cabo durante el día 13 de junio en donde Frisly Soberanis – con el Family Reunions Project (FRP) – y representantes del Laboratorio de Inmersión del CCD, intercambien y experimenten con la creación de herramientas de acción. De este grupo de trabajo se plantea que todo lo producido de esta fusión se exponga públicamente con el afán de ser reinterpretado, cuestionado e intervenido.

The Iluminator – Laboratorio de Tecnologías Libres

Los cuerpos y la virtualidad, las tecnologías como herramientas críticas y la narrativa a través de lo digital son centrales para la exploración tanto del colectivo The Illuminator como del Laboratorio de Tecnologías Libres. Este grupo de trabajo busca trazar las líneas de trabajo colaborativo que podemos conjugar desde ambos lados de la frontera México - EUA a través de diversas tecnologías, la movilización virtual de los cuerpos y el acceso a la información. La exploración de las tecnologías existentes para la creación de empatía, así como la inclusión e integración de diversos lenguajes serán clave para el desarrollo de ideas dentro de este espacio experimental que invita al público en general a unirse a la conversación y configuración de ideas a través de la exposición orgánica de los procesos discutidos dentro de este espacio.

Fabiano Kueva: EL EFECTO HUMBOLDT: Viajeros, narrativas y sentidos. América como forma y fuente

Archivo Alexander von Humboldt es una investigación artística que, mediante el performance y la instalación, interfiere en varios dispositivos institucionales: museo, archivo, biblioteca, universidad; para interpelar nociones como la autoridad científico-intelectual, la autenticidad artística-patrimonial o la legitimidad geo-bio-política fruto de las expediciones científicas desde el siglo XVIII. EL EFECTO HUMBOLDT, es un diálogo basado en la premisa performing ideas, que refiere a las relaciones entre palabra - cuerpo espacio – ritual para la generación de un lugar crítico y un lenguaje en común.

Kueva fue participante en la Bienal de la Habana (Cuba, 2009), la Bienal de Montevideo (Uruguay, 2014) y la Bienal de Venecia (Italia, 2015), y recipiente de la Beca Prince Claus Fund Grant 2010. Vive y trabaja en Ecuador.

En este Encuentro, nos parece importante explorar las dimensiones no lúdicas de "el mundo al revés", y no cabe duda que la persistente violencia que hoy se vive en territorio mexicano—el secuestro, el femicidio, la desaparición y el desplazamiento forzados, el homicidio, la disolución de cuerpos y de la vida misma—continúa marcando fuertemente el paisaje político y representacional de toda la región. Este imaginario nos invita a pensar y actuar frente a las violencias pasadas y presentes.

Biografías

Ileana Diéguez es profesora investigadora UAM-Cuajimalpa y profesora invitada en distintas universidades latinoamericanas. Es Doctora en Letras con estancia posdoctoral en Historia del Arte, UNAM. Sus temas de investigación abordan problemáticas del arte, cuerpo, memoria, duelo, representaciones de la violencia, teatralidades y performatividades expandidas y sociales.

El trabajo de Violeta Luna explora la relación entre el teatro, la performance y el compromiso social. Luna utiliza su cuerpo como territorio para cuestionar y comentar fenómenos sociales y políticos. Luna tiene un grado en Actuación del Centro Universitario de Teatro, UNAM. Luna presenta su trabajo e imparte talleres extensamente en todo el mundo.

Rián Lozano (Moderadora) es investigadora del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas de la UNAM y miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI). En la actualidad es la Secretaria Académica de este mismo Instituto. Licenciada en Historia del Arte, Rían Lozano es doctora en Filosofía (área de Estética y Teoría de las Artes) por la Universitat de València (España).

¿Cuántas feministas se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla? Sobre la creación de comedia feminista en el siglo XXI

"¿Cuántas feministas se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?" es una conferencia en la cual se ve desde adentro lo que yace detrás de los carteles humorísticos, las protestas mordaces, los ataques sorpresa por fax, los discursos de protesta pública y las acciones de teatro callejero con los cuales las Guerrilla Girls combatieron y expusieron el sexismo propio del mundo teatral. Incluye también una guía paso-a-paso para el arte de la colaboración.

Biografía

Donna Kaz es performer, activista, autora y líder feminista en asuntos relacionados a la combinación del activismo y el arte. En los últimos 20 años, ha comprobado que las feministas son cómicas mediante Guerrilla Girls On Tour.
