The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at NYU is pleased to invite you to a roundtable discussion on “Fighting Back: Artistic Resistance to Fascism in Brazil.” Professor Ferdinando Martins (University of São Paulo, Brazil) will focus on works created since the 2016 coup d’etat that is confronting the rise on neo-fascism in Brazil through diverse strategies and devices that reimagine the possibility and capacity of communities to resist and defeat the escalating authoritarianism and violence through political action.

Professor Martins’ remarks will be followed by artists/scholars Marcelo Denny and Marcos Bulhões, whose performance "Banho de Descarrego" will take place the following day, Friday, September 6th, in Washington Square Park. They will discuss their current work as well as a number of other political interventions developed within the Laboratório de Práticas Performativas, which creates works based on the concepts of body architecture and urban choralities in the fields of artivism, theater, and performance.
