Searching for Disappeared Migrants | Screening and Conversation

*This event will take place in Spanish*Join us for a screening of Searching for Disappeared Migrants, a short documentary directed by Alexandre Gohari and Léo Mattei, which features human rights activist Rubén Figueroa of the Movimiento Migrante Mesoamericano. As coordinator of the Movimiento's Puentes de Esperanza project, Figueroa works with Central American families to locate their migrant relatives who have gone missing in Mexico. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Figueroa and Roxana Bendezú, Executive Director of Migrant Roots Media, an independent platform examining the root causes of global migration.

There will be room for an engaging Q&A session at the end.

Rubén Figueroa has dedicated the past 14 years to defending the human rights of migrants traveling to the United States through Mexico and Central America. He is one of the organizers of the Caravana de Madres de Migrantes Desaparecidos, which takes place annually along the migration route in Mexico. For several years, he lived in Durham, North Carolina, and this migration experience inspires him to defend, document, and analyze the lives of migrants. He is an avid photographer and has documented the various journeys he embarks on with migrants.

Roxana Bendezú was born in Lima, Perú, and migrated to the United States in 1999. Throughout her career, she has advocated for immigrants' rights and worked to strengthen binational collaboration between faith and social justice communities. Roxana has served in various organizations, including the Hope Border Institute, Democracy North Carolina, Charlotte's local Sierra Club, and School of the Americas Watch. She also supported the foundation of the Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee in El Paso, Texas.
