A Distinguished Lecture by Amparo Marroquín (UCA-El Salvador)

With commentary by Rossana Reguillo (ITESO)

El Salvador has a history of being one of the most violent countries in the world. At the same time, it is also the place where an experiment in digital political communication has successfully transformed the ways in which truths and common sense are constructed. We will discuss the narrative strategies used by new anti-democratic and fascist movements to establish communicational hegemony in Latin America and across the world. 

Amparo Marroquín Parducci

Amparo Marroquín Parducci has been a professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA) since 1997. She specializes in cultural studies (narratives of memory, migration and violence in El Salvador) and Latin American communication studies (narratives of political communication and media literacy). She has been a visiting professor at different universities in the region and is currently Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the UCA.

Rossana Reguillo Cruz

Rossana Reguillo Cruz is an emeritus research professor in Mexico’s National Research System (SNI) and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. She is also an emeritus research professor in the Department of Sociocultural Studies at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO) in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she coordinates Signa Lab, an interdisciplinary center focused on network analysis. She has been a visiting professor at universities across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Her books include La construcción simbólica de la ciudad: Sociedad, desastre, comunicación (Guadalajara: Universidad Iberoamericana/ITESO, 1996); Ciudadano N: Crónicas de la diversidad, with an introduction by Carlos Monsiváis and a preface by Jean Franco (Guadalajara: ITESO, 1999); Estrategias del desencanto: La emergencia de culturas juveniles en Latinoamérica (Buenos Aires: Ed. Norma, 2000); Horizontes fragmentados: Comunicación, cultura, pospolítica.
