Frances Negrón-Muntaner is a filmmaker, writer, and scholar. She is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. She received her M.A. in Visual Anthropology and a Masters in Fine Arts from Temple University, and her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Rutgers University. She is the recipient of Ford, Truman, Scripps Howard, Rockefeller, and Pew fellowships as well as a Social Science Research Council and Andy Warhol Foundation grants. Among other awards, Dr. Negrón-Muntaner has been granted the Lenfest Award (2012), the OZY Educator Award (2017), the Frank Bonilla Public Intellectual Award (2019), and the Premio Borimix (2019). In 2004, she received the CHOICE Award for her book, Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and the Latinization of American Culture. She is also the editor of Puerto Rican Jam: Rethinking Nationalism and Colonialism; None of the Above: Puerto Ricans in the Global Era; and Sovereign Acts. As a filmmaker, Dr. Negrón-Muntaner has received recognition for her films, AIDS in the Barrio, Brincando en el charco: Portrait of a Puerto Rican, and War for Guam. She is the founder of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, and the Latino Arts and Activism Collection at Columbia University’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library. |
