What is Beautiful Trouble?

Beautiful Trouble is a book, (and now card-deck!), web toolbox, creative campaign incubator, and international network of artist-activist-trainers whose mission is to make grassroots movements more creative and more effective. Praised by Naomi Klein as “elegant and incendiary,” the book is being used by campaigns and classrooms across the world, has sold 25,000 copies, and has been translated into seven+ languages.  

What is the Strategy Card Deck?
The key strategies and tactics that have inspired centuries of people-powered victories are now in a deck of 100+ cards you can play. Use this deck to get creatively unstuck, design an action that pops, flashcard your way through social movement history, learn, and teach organizing, win grassroots victories, or just have fun staying up late with friends playing Cards for Humanity. Components: 132 cards, divided into 5 suits (Tactics, Principles, Theories, Stories & Methodologies), plus a booklet, wild cards, eternal debate cards, game-play cards, and three strategy cards to get your group’s strategic campaign planning process going. Well, you get everyone together to play the game! (Right after an opera singer sings all the cards, and a tarot-reader uses them to do your cosmic-political divination, and, well, a few other fun hijinks that we cannot at this time, disclose). So please join us for an evening of games and merriment to help send this new revolutionary tool out into the world in style.

The Critical Tactics Lab (CTL) is the Hemispheric Institute’s permanent forum for discussion and research on the practices and methods of contemporary and historical political action. Drawing on the Institute’s ongoing work with political artists and activists from the Americas, the CTL seeks to promote critical reflection about social movements by providing a space in which the expansive affinities of critical practice and action can be made visible and strengthened.

The event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required. A photo ID is required to enter NYU buildings and 20 Cooper Square is a wheelchair accessible venue.
