Buscando nuevos caminos (‘Looking for New Paths’) is a play about about the false promises driving indigenous men and women to seek new opportunities in the United States. The forced separation of migration leaves many women behind, alone in a society where they must learn to survive the violence and greed of unscrupulous relatives. When three young women decide to make the long journey to Mexico's northern border and cross into the United States in search of their parents, they not only face the harsh conditions of the desert, but also suffer abuse at the hands of their ‘coyote.’ Trying to escape the dangers and violence along the border, their family gets separated. The women of FOMMA offer strong monologues about the desire to cross the border—they weigh the reasons to leave, but most importantly, the reasons to stay in Chiapas. They end the play with a firm ‘I will live here, and I will die here,’ beckoning their brothers and sisters to come back home and look for new paths in their own land. The performance is followed by a Q&A with the audience.
