About
The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) remains the first and only successful slave revolt in world history. Despite the achievement demonstrated by the enslaved people in colonial Haiti, the story of Haiti’s revolutionary movement remains incomplete. What do we know about the Haitian Revolution? And what do we not know about it?
This discussion with Haitian women Vodouisants--Sabine Blaizin, Véronëque Ignace, Stephanie Pierre, and Mahalia Stines-- will consider the role Haitian Vodou may play in discovering new stories about the Haitian Revolution. Participants will discuss the role Vodou may play in reframing our understandings of the Haitian Revolution, and how we can potentially turn to Vodou to discover women’s histories of Haiti’s liberation struggle.
This event is a collaboration with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) and the Haitian Creole Language Institute of New York (HCLI); and it is in partnership with NYU’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), The Hemispheric Institute at NYU, NYU’s Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD), the Latinx Project at NYU, Social Cultural Analysis (SCA), and the Postcolonial, Race, and Diaspora Studies Colloquium (PRDS).
